What is Kid Governor®?
Civic Nebraska, in partnership with The Connecticut Democracy Center, has brought the award-winning Kid Governor® civic education program to the Cornhusker State. This initiative gives Nebraska fifth-graders a one-of-a-kind chance to campaign for – and serve in – a real, statewide office of their own.
Kid Governor engages elementary students in state government, elections, and active citizenship. Since its launch, the initiative has expanded to Oregon, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and beyond. Now, Nebraska joins this growing network of states committed to empowering young leaders through immersive, hands-on learning in democracy.
Each fall, participating fifth-grade classrooms across Nebraska nominate one peer to run for Kid Governor. Candidates produce campaign videos highlighting a community issue they care about and outline a three-point plan for change. After a statewide election, one student earns the title of Nebraska’s Kid Governor® and serves a one-year term of leadership, advocacy, and action. The Kid Governor then works with Civic Nebraska and fellow student ambassadors to bring their platform to life – inspiring civic engagement and service in classrooms statewide.
Nebraska’s Kid Governor® is led by Civic Nebraska and is a state affiliate of Kid Governor®, an award-winning civic education program created by The Connecticut Democracy Center.
