Civic Nebraska launches Nebraska’s Kid Governor® program

Civic Nebraska is partnering with The Connecticut Democracy Center to bring the award-winning Kid Governor® civic education program to Nebraska. The program gives the state’s fifth-grade students a unique opportunity to run for a real-life, statewide office of their own.

Kid Governor is an award-winning civics program created by the Connecticut Democracy Center to engage elementary students in state government, elections, and active citizenship. Since its founding, Kid Governor has expanded to several states, including Oregon, New Hampshire, and New Jersey. In becoming the latest affiliate, Nebraska joins a network of states committed to empowering young leaders through real-world, hands-on experiences.

Each fall, participating fifth-grade classes across Nebraska nominate one peer to run for Kid Governor. Candidates create campaign videos about a community issue they care about and share a three-point platform for change. After a statewide election, one student is elected Nebraska’s Kid Governor and will serve a one-year term of leadership, advocacy, and education. The Kid Governor will work closely with Civic Nebraska and other student ambassadors to implement their platform and engage students statewide in civics and service.
